Please don't tell anyone I called Charlize "Ashley Judd" for the first half of the movie, it just happened.

What a really great movie. I would put it in the top 5 Best Picture noms, if you ask me. What a shame it hasn't been getting more recognition. What especially ticks me off is during Oscar rantings/previews, they keep showing Tommy Lee Jones clips from No Country knowing full well he's nominated for this film. Wtf?
It's not heavy handed, however unsubtle the ending is--I wasn't so much surprised by what Tommy Lee Jones did (in the end) as I was by the thought of whether or not someone could get away with it. Even in his circumstances, living in the uber-patriotic-crazed type of country we do, I would like to see anyone get away with that. I honestly didn't find it too preachy or We're Here to Deliver You a Message, and it was certainly better than Crash (same writer/director).
It was a very effective film, very scary and depressing and neither of us made it out with a dry face. I think it especially bothered D!
So hey, run right out and watch it!

LOVED Elah! Glad you were pleased with it, too. I thought the ending was about as rebellious as that particular character could get.
Susan Sarandon was completely wasted in that movie, wasn't she? Of course, I'm no fan of her work to begin with.
Just saw Sweeney Todd today. I agree 100% with everything you wrote. Depp and Cohen were great. But Tim Burton would do well to cast the right actress next time, instead of his girlfriend.

It was heartbreaking without being eye-rolling, good stuff.
And I thought that was pretty damn rebellious considering how people around here get. Maybe it's just my neck of the woods, but that's one way to get shot!
I know, Burton really needs a trout slapping of the biggest kind.
Hey, it just sounds magical, I can't wait to blind-buy the DVD.

May I recommend a double feature of In the Valley of Elah followed by Away From Her?

(Of course, the former is really incredible, the latter I turned off with 30 minutes to go...)
The wife has expressly asked if we can never watch Away From Her, because the trailer looked so miserable.
And she's right: stay THE FUCK AWAY from that movie.
